Acupuncture for Pain Management

Eyes

Most people have eye problems at home or another. Some are minor and will go away on their own. Others need a specialist’s care like eye pain, blurred vision, red eyes, night blindness, light sensitivity, dry eyes, excessive tearing and vision change due to age.

Bell's Palsy

Bell’s palsy is a neurological disorder that causes paralysis or weakness on one side of the face. One of the nerves that controls muscles in your face becomes injured or stops working properly. Symptoms include: sudden weakness or paralysis on one side of your face.

Shoulder

What most people call the shoulder is really several joints that combine with tendons and muscles to allow a wide range of motion in the arm – from scratching your back to throwing the perfect pitch.

Mobility has its price, however. It may lead to increasing problems with instability or impingement of the soft tissue or bony structures in your shoulder, resulting in pain. You may feel pain only when you move your shoulder, or all the time. The pain may be temporary, or it may continue and require medical diagnosis and treatment.

Upper Arm

What leads to upper arm pain? Overuse, weak muscles, improper technique, and overly intense training can all be responsible for upper arm pain. If the biceps become excessively tight, it can result in not only pain but also an inability to fully extend the elbow. Similarly, the triceps, primarily engaged in extending the elbow, can cause discomfort during severe cases, even limiting the range of elbow flexion.

Tennis Elbow

Lateral epicondylitis or tennis elbow is swelling or tearing of the tendons that bend your wrist backward away from your pain. It is caused by repetitive motion of the forearm muscles which attach to the outside of your elbow. The muscles and tendons become sore from excessive strain.

Forearm

Your forearm consists of two bones that come together to join at the wrist, called the ulna and radius. Injuries to these bones or to nearby nerves, muscles, or joints can lead to forearm pain.

Wrist

Though most people think of the wrist as one joint, it is actually made up of several different joints. The joints form where the two forearm bones – the radius and the ulna – meet a group of bones called the carpus. The carpus consists of eight bones. These eight bones, plus a band of connective tissue, make up the carpal tunnel, which is a tube running through the wrist that contains tendons and a nerve. Damage to any of these structures can result in wrist problems.

Hand & Fingers

Problems with the hand and fingers are common and can be caused by simple things like carrying out repetitive tasks or an injury during sport or a fall. As you get older, normal age-related changes can cause your wrist, hand or finger problem to flare-up now and again, often for no reason.

Sheen

Shin splints are a common exercise – related problem. The term “shin splints” refers to pain along the inner edge of the shinbone (tibia).

Front Thigh

A quadriceps muscle strain is an acute tearing injury of the quadriceps. This injury is usually due to an acute stretch of the muscle, often at the same time of a forceful contraction or repetitive functional overloading.

Injury to the quadriceps muscle group can be painful and debilitating. Strains and contusions of the quadriceps are common in athletics and result in lost time from training and competition.

Knee

Knee pain is a common complaint among adults and most often associated with general wear and tear from daily activities like walking, bending, standing and lifting. Athletes who run or play sports that involve jumping or quick pivoting are also more likely to experience knee pain and problems.

Throat

Your throat is a tube that carries food to your esophagus and air to your windpipe and larynx. Throat problems are common.  The cause is usually a viral infection, but other causes include allergies, infection with strep bacteria or the leaking of stomach acids back up into the esophagus, called GERD. Also swelling of the voice box, which can cause a hoarse voice or loss of voice (Laryngitis).

Ankle

Ankle pain refers to any kind of pain or discomfort affecting any part of the ankle. Ankle pain can happen for many reasons. The most common causes include injury, arthritis and normal wear and tear. Depending on the cause, you may feel pain or stiffness anywhere around the ankle. Your ankle may also swell, and you may not be able to put any weight on it.

Toes

Everyone has had a minor problem with a toe, foot, or ankle. Most of the time our body movements don’t cause problems. But sometimes symptoms develop from everyday wear and tear or overuse. Toe, foot, or ankle problems can also occur from injuries or the natural process of aging.

Hip

Hip pain is pain or discomfort you feel in or around your hip joint.
Your hip joint is where your thigh bone (femur) connects to your pelvis. Your hip joint is one of the largest joints in your body, and you use it constantly to move, support your weight and maintain your balance.

Hip joint pain can range from a temporary, short-term annoyance to a bigger issue that needs treatment from a healthcare provider. The pain might come and go. For example, you might feel hip pain when you’re walking or moving, but it gets better when you rest. Some people also feel pain during different parts of the day. You could feel more pain first thing in the morning when you wake up. It’s also common to feel hip pain at night, especially if you sleep lying on the same side as your painful hip.

Another common hip pain is Piriformis muscle syndrome. Piriformis syndrome occurs when your piriformis muscle compresses your sciatic nerve and results in inflammation. It can cause pain or numbness in your buttock and down the back of your leg. It can happen on one side of your body or both.

The piriformis is a flat, narrow muscle. It runs from your lower spine through your butt to the top of your thighs. Your piriformis muscle extends to each side of your body and aids in almost every movement of your lower body.

The sciatic nerve most commonly runs underneath the piriformis. The nerve travels from your spinal cord, through your buttocks, down the back of each leg, to your feet. It’s the longest, largest nerve in your body.

Harmstring

A hamstring injury involves straining or pulling one of the hamstring muscles — the group of three muscles that run along the back of the thigh.

Hamstring injuries often occur in people who play sports that involve sprinting with sudden stops and starts. Examples include soccer, basketball, football and tennis. Hamstring injuries can occur in runners and in dancers as well

Heel

Heel problems are common and can be painful. Often, they result from too much stress on your heel bone and the tissues that surround it. That stress can come from: Injuries, bruises that you get walking, running or jumping and being overweight. These can lead to tendonitis, bursitis, and fasciitis, which are all types of inflammation of the tissues that surround your heel. Over time the stress can cause bone spurs and deformities. Certain diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout, can also lead to heel problems.

Back & Sciatica

Back pain is one of the most common medical problems in the United States. It can range from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp pain that may shoot down the leg. Sometimes it can come on suddenly from an accident, a fall, or lifting something heavy, or it can develop slowly because of age-related degenerative changes in the spine.

Several factors increase your risk of developing back pain and can include:

  • Fitness level: Back pain is more common among people who are not physically fit. Back pain is also more likely if you exercise too strenuously after being inactive for a while (overdoing it).

  • Weight gain: A diet high in calories and fat, combined with an inactive lifestyle, can lead to obesity. This can put stress on the back.

  • Job-related risk factors: Jobs that require heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, or twisting can injure the back. A desk job may also play a role, especially if you have poor posture or sit all day in an uncomfortable chair.

  • Stress level: If you chronically have poor sleep, depression, or anxiety, back pain can be more frequent and more severe.

  • Age: Back pain becomes more common with age, particularly after the age of 45.

Back pain can range from local pain in a specific spot to generalized pain spreading all over the back. Sometimes the pain radiates away from the back to other areas of your body, such as the buttocks, legs, or abdomen.

Sciatica is a common type of pain affecting the sciatic nerve, a large nerve extending from your lower back down the back of each leg. The telltale sign of sciatica is pain that starts in your lower back and shoots down one leg, sometimes all the way into your foot.

Golfer's Elbow

Golfer’s elbow is the inflammation of the tendons that attach the muscles of the forearm to the bone on the inside the elbow joint. The condition is usually caused by repeated, strenuous arm movement.

Neck

Sometimes called cervicalgia, is pain in or around your spine beneath your head. Neck pain is a common symptom of many different injuries and medical conditions.

You might have axial neck pain (felt mostly in your neck) or radicular neck pain (pain that shoots into other areas, such as your shoulders or arms). It can be acute (lasting from days to 6 weeks) or chronic (lasting longer than 3 months).

Neck pain can interfere with your daily activities and reduce your quality of life if it’s not treated. Fortunately, most causes of neck pain aren’t serious and improve with conservative treatments, like acupuncture, exercise and stress management.

Vertigo or Dizziness

Dizziness is a term used to describe a range of sensations, such as feeling faint, woozy, weak or unsteady. Dizziness that creates the false sense that you or your surroundings are spinning or moving is called vertigo. Dizziness is one of the more common reasons adults visit their doctors. Frequent dizzy spells or constant dizziness can significantly affect your life. But dizziness rarely signals a life-threatening condition. Treatment of dizziness depends on the cause and your symptoms.

Nose

Among the common nasal conditions, we find allergic rhinitis, sinus infections, and nasal congestion. Combining acupuncture treatment with herbal remedies often yields highly effective results.

Foot

Many people have pain in the base of their foot. This could be due to overuse of one of many different structures in your foot. Common examples are sesamoiditis (inflammation of structures surrounding two small bones under the big toe joint) and plantar fasciitis (overuse of a ligament-like structure that runs underneath the length of the foot).

TMJ Disorder

Pain and compromised movement of the jaw joint and the surrounding muscles. The temporomandibular joint(TMJ) acts like a sliding hinge, connecting your jawbone to your skull. Dysfunction can lead to pain and discomfort. Jaw pain, difficulty chewing, clicking and locking of the jaw joint are some of the symptoms.

Chest

A strained chest muscle can often cause extreme chest discomfort and pain, making it difficult to perform and enjoy your daily activities. When a chest muscle becomes strained, it can cause a sudden, sharp pain that radiates throughout the chest area. Your chest muscle can become strained when you lift a heavy object or get injured while playing contact sports like football.

Chest pain is also a symptom of several other serious health conditions that require immediate medical attention. Heart attack, pulmonary embolism, and pneumonia are some of the many health problems that can cause chest pain. See your doctor right away if you are experiencing any type of chest pain so you can receive a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Abdomen

An abdominal muscle strain is fairly common in athletes and active populations because this group of the pulled abdominal muscle is constantly engaged to keep the athlete’s core tight so that the athlete can perform and execute skills using his/her extremities and/or total body.

The muscles of the abdomen are layered from deep to superficial including the transverse abdominis, internal and external obliques and rectus abdominis. Each muscle has a function linked to its structure.

The deepest muscle, transverse abdominis constricts to hold the abdominal contents in place and to help with forced expiration, coughing, laughing, and sneezing. The internal and external obliques’ diagonal fibers are designed to assist in trunk rotation, lateral flexion (movement sideways), and when working as a pair, trunk flexion. The most superficial muscle group is the rectus abdominis.

The most common causes of abdominal strains are sudden twisting (i.e., swinging a bat) or sudden hyperextension of the spine (i.e., as seen during dynamic gymnastics movements).

Groin

Groin pain is discomfort that happens where the inside of your upper thigh and your abdomen come together. It’s not the same as pain in your testicles, though that can sometimes cause pain that can spread to your groin. Most often, groin pain is the result of a muscle, ligament, or tendon strain.

An acute groin injury may occur from a direct blow, a stabbing injury, or a fall, or from the leg being turned in an abnormal position. You can pull (strain) or tear a groin muscle during exercise, such as running, skating, kicking in soccer, or playing basketball. You can strain a groin muscle when you lift, push, or pull heavy objects.

Overuse injuries occur when too much stress is placed on an area. This often happens when you overdo an activity or repeat the same activity day after day. Overuse can lead to muscle strains or tears or may cause swelling.

Calf

Headache

Almost everyone has had a headache. The most common type of headache is a tension headache. A tension headache is the most common type of headache.

It is pain or discomfort in the head, shoulder, or neck, and is often associated with muscle tightness in these areas. Tension headaches occur when neck and shoulder muscles become tense or contract. The muscle contractions can be a response to stress, depression, head injury, or anxiety. They may occur at any age, but are most common in adults and older teens. It is slightly more common in women and tends to run in families.

Any activity that causes the head to be held in one position for a long time without moving can cause a headache. Activities may include typing or other computer work, fine work with the hands, and using a microscope. Sleeping in a cold room or sleeping with the neck in an abnormal position may also trigger a tension headache.

Ear

In the realm of ear-related health issues, we commonly encounter ear pain (otalgia), ear ringing (tinnitus), and deafness. Ear pain can be categorized into primary otalgia, originating from issues within the ear itself, or secondary otalgia, resulting from external factors. Ear ringing often occurs temporarily due to stress and is characterized by high-pitched sounds. Low-pitch ear ringing is typically associated with aging or overexertion and may occasionally manifest as a symptom of deafness.

The Science Behind Acupuncture: Acupuncture is a therapeutic technique that originated in ancient China over 2,500 years ago. It is based on the concept that energy, or “qi” (pronounced “chee”), flows through the body along pathways called meridians. When the flow of qi is disrupted, it can result in pain and illness. Acupuncture aims to restore the balance of qi by inserting fine needles into specific points along the meridians.

Modern research has shown that acupuncture has a profound impact on the body’s nervous system. It stimulates the release of endorphins, which are natural painkillers, and activates the body’s anti-inflammatory responses.
